Petrographic and Lithological Analysis and Interpretation

Sedimentological descriptions and interpretations of cores, petrographic studies of thin sections, and descriptions of cuttings are tailored to the specific needs of our clients. Point-counting during the description of thin sections can focus on composition, framework, porosity, or grain size, as required by the needs of the client. The minimum number of points counted is 250. Photomicrographs and digital images are available.

% Sand Fraction Analysis

The sand log directly measures the sand-sized fraction from cuttings or cores.  The disaggregation techniques used in foraminifera procedures isolate rock particles from very fine sand (106 microns) to coarse sand (850 microns).  The processed sample weight is then compared to the original weight of the cleaned cuttings to calculate the percent sand-sized fraction.

    Quantifiably determine sand/shale percentages

Can be derived from archived samples whenever needed

Aids in the determination of the volume of shale (Vsh)

Provides resolution of sand development in laminated sequences

Determines rock properties directly rather than indirectly

Aide the paleontologist in quantitative fauna abundance determinations

Digital Photolog

The Ellington Digital Photolog is a browser-based visualization system for displaying photographs of cuttings from multiple wells simultaneously.  The Photolog creates a digital stratigraphic pseudo-section allowing for the rapid inspection and visual confirmation of geologic issues as they arise.  Bring your rocks back into the office where they belong.

Thin Section Preparation and Analysis

In evaluating mineralogical properties, thin section analysis provides a detailed description of the sample including the framework, porosity, and grain size.  Standard preparation includes impregnation of the sample and a final lapped thickness of 30 microns with a 600 grit finish.  Clients can choose impregnation with clear, blue, or fluorescent dye “spike” epoxy.  Options, such as polishing or staining for feldspars and carbonates are available upon request.

Fluid Inclusion Analysis and Microthermometry

Petrographic examination of fluid inclusions (liquid or gas impurities trapped within minerals) is an important step in the reconstruction of the PVTX (Pressure-Volume-Temperature-Composition) evolution of a hydrocarbon system or source.

The measurement of temperatures at which phase-transitions occur in fluid inclusions is microthermometry.  This technique provides quantitative data about the diagenetic history, the thermal history of the rock, and the composition of fluids that flowed through a rock.
